The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
