A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on recently would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.
